"MAYAN
JUNGLE SCENE - YUCATAN"
This painting shows the beauty of the rainforest and the animals and people
who live there. In the background we see the first observatory in the
world – Chichen Itza. The young Mayan hunter bears the classic features
of his forefathers. He is aiming his poison blow dart (camouflaged by
a leaf) at a snake. Above the snake are two Keel-Billed Toucans. The Toucan
is one of the most striking birds in the forest and is native to the area
as are the snake and beautiful butterfly. On the left, the resplendent
Quetzal, treasured by the ancient Aztec and Mayan, was considered a sacred
bird. The Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala.
